KOCHI: A project for conversion of a fishing vessel into a seismic survey vessel was successfully completed at the Cochin Shipyard Limited. The work on MV Pavlovsk, owned by Nordic of Singapore, was completed ahead of schedule, according to CSL. The major structural modification on the 62-metre-long vessel was fabrication and erection of a new hangar deck. Installation of seismic compressors, crane, sewage treatment plant and fire and safety equipment were among the works carried out at the shipyard. The facility for accommodation was upgraded for 42-members. Prestigious contractThe contract for the project was signed on April 3 last year and the ship arrived in the yard on May 4. The order was a prestigious one for the shipyard. It also opened opportunities in the field of hi-tech conversion projects. Seismic vessels are used for offshore surveys and provide images of seabed and its geological structure. Oil companies decide on the location for drilling, based on the images. The increase in instances of exploration for new offshore hydrocarbon deposits has driven up the demand for modern seismographic vessels. Rajesh Gopalakrishnan, Assistant General Manager, said the project was a challenge for the shipyard in respect of conceptualisation, detailed engineering and documentation. SKA Marine, Chennai, assisted the shipyard in carrying out the work.
