Kochi gearing up for meet

KOCHI: The 54th National schools athletics championship begins at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on January 7 and Kochi is fast gearing up for the event.

Nearly 2,000 athletes, in the under-14, 17 and under-19 age groups, will be seen in action in the five-day meet which will be inaugurated by R.S. Gavai, the Kerala Governor.

Kerala, the overall champion for the last few years, last hosted the event in 2000. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony on January 11.

Torch relay

A torch relay, which begins at Thiruvananthapuram, Kasargod and Wynad districts, will reach Kochi on January 6. Some of the State’s top sportspersons will figure in the last few legs of the relay.

A colourful ceremony, which includes the State’s traditional dances and a massive PT display, will mark the championship’s official opening at 3.30 p.m. on January 7 but competitions will begin at 9 a.m. — Principal Correspondent
