Rinil’s strike helps SBT enter final

KOCHI: State Bank of Travancore, Thiruvananthapuram, defeated Kozhikode’s Universal Soccer Club 1-0 to enter the final of the Bhagat Soccer Cup all-Kerala football tournament at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Friday. C.J. Rinil scored the match-winner in the 12th minute.

As Viva Kerala is now in Perinthalmanna for the State inter-club championship, the final has been fixed for January 7.

The final will be played at the FACT Ground, Udyogamandal.

KSEB plans to recruit hoopsters

The Kerala State Electricity Board will recruit players to its men’s basketball team this year. Players who have represented the country in international meets or have taken part in all-India inter-university meets and other tournaments recognised by SAI can apply for the post.

The selection will be based on trials and interview. The application form and details can be downloaded from KSEB’s website www.kseboard.org. The last date for submitting applications is January 17.

Akhil spins a web

Spinner M.S. Akhil’s five-wicket haul helped Maruthi Homes TCC ‘A’ defeat Century CC by five wickets in the Ernakulam District A-Division cricket league opener in Kochi on Friday.

The scores: Century CC 159 in 43 overs (M.S. Akhil five for 35) lost to Maruthi Homes TCC ‘A’ 161 for five in 33.2 overs (M.M. Sindo 47).

State junior hockey

The State junior hockey championship will be held at the Pathanamthitta district stadium from January 17 to 19. Fourteen teams will take part in the tournament which will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis.

The teams have been divided into four pools and the pool winners will qualify for the semifinals which will be held on January 17. Kannur is the defending champion and Kollam the runner-up.

Youth volleyball

The 11th National youth volleyball championship, organised by the Angamaly Sports Association, will be held at the Kingini floodlit stadium and the St. Joseph’s High School Ground in Angamaly from January 23 to February 1.

An organising committee, with P.J. Joy as chairman, K. T. Abdurahiman as organising secretary and Tony Parambi as general convener, has been formed.
