REGAINING LOST GROUND: Parts of a college building being demolished in Tumkur on Friday. TUMKUR: Drive to clear road encroachments in Tumkur was resumed on Friday. The drive, which was launched on October 30, was stopped in the first week of November, as the Government had agreed to a suggestion that the encroachers would clear the illegal structures on their own. On Friday morning, Tumkur City Municipal Council authorities resumed the drive and cleared 23 encroachments on Pune-Bangalore National Highway that passes through Tumkur. Tulasi Madhineni, CMC Commissioner, said 50-foot wide road had become a narrow lane because of encroachments and illegal structures that had come up on the margin areas. Ms. Madhineni denied that the CMC had permitted any of these structures and said there was no truth in the claims by encroachers. Vale Chandru, councillor from the area, said it was necessary to have a meeting with the owners of the “disputed buildings”. He wanted the CMC to “negotiate with the property owners on the exact width of the road”. Ms. Madhineni said sufficient time was given to the owners to clear the structures. While a few owners responded to the proposal, institutions and commercial units refused to fall in line. Hence, CMC had to clear the encroachments. A temple, a government hospital, a college, and a commercial complex were among those structures that were cleared by the CMC.
