Training to commence in June

EZHIMALA (KANNUR): Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta has said that full-fledged training of naval cadets in the Naval Academy here will commence from June 2009.

Addressing a press conference at the academy here on Friday, Admiral Mehta said initially, 750 cadets would be enrolled in the academy. The number of trainees would be increased to 1,100 by 2013. The cadets to be trained here would not only include officer trainees from the Indian Coast Guard, but also those from friendly countries such as Japan and Korea.

“We expect reasonable number of officer cadets from abroad,” he said adding that the academy would be opened for foreign officer trainees after it was stabilised in a period of two to four years. Admiral Mehta said all officers inducted into the Navy under various schemes would undergo basic training at the academy. He said the syllabus and the curriculum had been drafted to equip the trainees to acquire skills required in handling future needs of the Navy.

Seven 20-week orientation courses for other direct entry scheme in various branches had already been conducted here over the past three years, he said adding that the short-term courses would continue.

Apart from the state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, workshops, library and auditorium, the academy also had unique physical fitness training facilities, including indoor swimming and diving pools, athletic track and stadium, variety of playfields and courts, a firing range and a watermanship training centre. A comprehensive information technology facility was being set up on the academy campus, he said. He said the academy would offer all its facilities for research scholars in the field.

Admiral Mehta said the academy built at an estimated cost of Rs.720 crore would have staff, including personnel for training and administrative functions. The campus was expected to have a population of about 4,000, including the staff and their families. Chief of the Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral Sunil K. Damle and Naval Academy Commanding Officer Rear Admiral M.P. Muralidharan were also present at the press conference.
