Court annuls single judge’s directive

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday made inapplicable a directive of the single judge to the government not to issue notifications for acquiring land in the State or continue with the acquisition proceedings already initiated until the disposal of all the compensation applications for the land acquired for setting up a Naval Academy at Ezhimala in Kannur.

The Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice J.B. Koshy and Justice V. Giri issued the order on an appeal filed by the State government against the directive. The single judge while considering a petition filed by a land owner at Ezhimala had ordered that all the applications should be disposed of on or before May 31, 2009. If any application could not be disposed of within the time span, the State government should not issue any notification for acquiring land or should not continue with the acquisition proceedings already initiated until all applications were disposed of.

Priests’ appointment

A Bench comprising Justice P.R. Raman and Justice T.R. Ramachandran Nair on Friday directed the Tranvancore Devaswom Board to appoint provisionally candidates whose experience certificates were found to be genuine to the post of priests in various temples under the board.

The Bench ordered that they be appointed provisionally for 179 days at a stretch pending finalisation of a Vigilance inquiry into the allegations that certain candidates had produced forged experience certificates.

The court issued the order in view of the dearth of priests in various temples which had affected the rituals at these temples. The Vigilance had earlier verified the genuineness of the certificates and found that seven candidates had produced forged certificates.
