“All important projects to finish ahead of Games”

NEW DELHI: Delhi Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan on Friday said all important projects of the department will be completed well ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Inspecting construction work at Tyagraj Nagar Stadium and upcoming flyovers in the Capital at IIT, Munirka and Rao Tularam Marg, the Minister said the construction work would be monitored at different stages and there would be no shortage of funds for the projects. He was accompanied by PWD Secretary K. K. Sharma and other officials. After visiting all the projects, Mr. Chauhan told media persons that the Government was committed to completing all the projects related to the Commonwealth Games within the stipulated time-frame. The Tyagraj Stadium, he asserted, would be completed before the scheduled date.

“The main structure of the stadium is ready and it will be completed by December this year,” he added.

Expressing satisfaction over the construction work, the Minister said the stadium being constructed at a cost of Rs.300 crore would have a seating capacity for 5,000 people. “It would be a stadium with distinguished features,” he added. While visiting the construction sites of the IIT, Munirka and Rao Tularam flyovers, he admonished officials for unnecessary delay in completion of the projects. He warned them that if the work was not completed within the stipulated time-frame he would take strict action against them. He also warned the construction company -- AFCON Infrastructure Limited -- against unnecessary delays in the projects. The Minister pointed out that he had already written to the Chief Secretary requesting him to take action against the erring company.

The Minister directed the officials to complete the work on all three flyovers by this coming March.
