Shimoga
Traditional beginning: Minister for Urban Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Kumar inaugurating a conference of elected members of civic bodies in Shimoga on Friday. SHIMOGA: Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Suresh Kumar on Friday urged the elected representatives to strive for the development of civic bodies. Addressing the elected representatives from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the civic bodies of the district, Mr. Suresh Kumar asked them to put an end to corruption and misuse of funds so that they could reach the targets fixed. He said that it was ironical that there was leakage in the annual municipal grant to the extent of 90 per cent and asked the members to initiate steps to prevent it. He stressed the need for maintaining quality work on development projects being implemented by the civic bodies. It was also important to meet the deadline strictly. Mr. Suresh Kumar said that no civic body could develop unless it checked corruption and misuse of funds. The silence of taxpayers should not be construed as their weakness. He asked the elected members to consider the administrative problems as challenges and prove their efficiency. “There should be a holy alliance among dedicated members, efficient officers and honest contractors to achieve a rapid progress in the municipal administration,” he said. Mr. Suresh Kumar said that 34 per cent of the population of the State lived in urban centres, which was expected to increase to 50 per cent by 2035-40. Efforts should be made to provide basic amenities. It was wrong to think that urban development only related to the growth of Bangalore. Migration of people from other parts of the State to Bangalore could be controlled only if other cities and towns were allowed to grow, he said. President of the Shimoga district unit of BJP Girish Patel presided over the function. State unit secretary M.B. Bhanu Prakash, former Shimoga MP Ayanur Manjunath, S.S. Jyothi Prakash, S. Dattatri and T.G. Sridhar Rao were present. Councillor S.N. Channabasappa welcomed the gathering.
