Corporation distributes bins for garbage collection

Green bin is for biodegradable waste and white one for all other material

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation distributed more than 500 garbage bins at Ward 62 in the city on Friday as part of its Rs.96 crore Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme.

The residents of two streets in Saibaba Colony were provided with a total of 515 bins to enable them to store garbage and hand them over to the conservancy workers.

Each house was given a green bin for biodegradable waste and a white one for the non-biodegradable.

The Corporation said that it had so far supplied nearly three lakh bins and had a stock of 34,585 as on December 31.

Of these, 515 were distributed on Friday. The Corporation already 210 lorries to transport garbage to yards. And, 38 more were to join this fleet.

While handing over the bins to residents, Mayor R. Venkatachalam explained to them the types of waste that were to be stored separately in the bins.

Segregation

The Corporation was trying to explain to the people how segregation of waste at source (at the point of generation) was central to the projects objective of a garbage-free city.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra and Health Committee Chairman P. Nachimuthu were present during the distribution. Mr. Mishra said the scheme needed to be speeded up and there was need for more staff to implement and sustain the project.

Official sources in the Corporation said more engineers were needed in each of the four zones to keep the scheme going. Some councillors had even insisted that the Corporation form a separate wing for waste management.

Apart from the distribution of bins, 17 beneficiaries of the scheme for houses for the urban poor were provided with a loan of Rs.28,000. Cheques for the amount were handed over to the beneficiaries at Anna Nagar.

Houses

The houses were being built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The Corporation said that so far, 1,813 beneficiaries had been provided with financial assistance totalling more than Rs.14 crore.
