Fitness mantras from ‘Chak De’ girl

Madhur Tankha

Shilpa Shukla

NEW DELHI: “Chak De India” girl Shilpa Shukla on Friday released health messages on the benefits of weight reduction and tips on what to eat and how to keep oneself fit.

“When I did my first film ‘Khamosh Paani’ that won numerous awards, I weighed 72 kg. For ‘Chak De India’ I exercised and played so much hockey that I ended up weighing just 53 kg. Now I weigh 57 kg. Remaining in top physical condition is an essential prerequisite in any profession including mine. I jog on the beach and during shooting I meditate for 15 minutes. I take green tea and eat a lot of daal. I have replaced rice with ‘dalia’. I drink black coffee and don’t sip cold drinks,” she said.

Stating that it was a dream come true to act with Shah Rukh Khan, the former theatre artiste said it was a great learning experience to act with him. “As a person Khan is magnanimous and on the sets he is passionate about acting. He told me that I should treat every shot as my last one as only then I would be able to give my best. During shooting I was mentally conditioned as a hockey player. Therefore I always used to treat him as coach Kabir Khan,” added Shilpa. Acknowledging that her second film has catapulted her to stardom, Shilpa says: “Every day I thank myself for getting this all-important film. I didn’t even know how to hold a hockey stick but I did six months of rigorous training and was mentally connected with the sport. Even at night we would play hockey and our endurance level increased by leaps and bounds.”

Speaking about her upcoming films, Shilpa says she decided to do “Mumbai Mast Kalandar” because she wanted to break free from her image of “Chak De India”: “I have had a makeover. It has a new star cast. In UTV’s ‘Season’s Greetings’ I am playing opposite Javed Jaffri and Tabu. Then there is a Pritish Nandy film with Rajat Kapoor and another untitled film. In all these four movies I am playing the main character.”
