Rs. 38.32 lakh for research on Buffalo Pheromone

TIRUCHI: The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi, has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 38.32 lakh to G. Archunan, Co-ordinator, Centre for Pheromone Technology and Reader in Animal Science, Bharathidasan University, to carry out a research on Buffalo Pheromone.

In the collaborative research project titled ‘assessment of estrus-specific pheromones with reference to kit development and enhancement of the reproductive efficiency in buffaloes’, Dr. Archunan will be the Principal Investigator and V. Ramesh Sarvanakumar, Professor, Department of Livestock Production and Management, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, the Co-Investigator. A. Illangovan of Department of Chemistry, Bharathidasan University, will also participate in the research. A sum of Rs. 33.9 lakh would be utilised by the Bharathidasan University and the rest by the Namakkal Veterinary College.

The objective of the project is to develop a kit for estrus detection in female buffaloes which, unlike other mammals, do not reveal distinctive external signs or symptoms when they are ‘on heat’ (sexually ready for mating). Dr. Archunan and his team have already identified estrus-specific volatile compounds in the urine of female buffaloes and have planned to device a kit using the compounds, which they strongly believe will be immensely useful in buffalo reproduction.
