NAGAPATTINAM: Paddy crop raised on about 1.13 lakh hectares was affected during the Nisha cyclone which hit the district last month. The cyclone had also damaged sugarcane crop raised on 4,853 hectares, plantain on 500 hectares, flowers on 298 hectares, horticulture crops on 440 hectares, casuarina on 6,856 hectares, Collector M. Jayaraman said while addressing the “Farmers’ Grievances day” meeting held here on Tuesday. The district administration had submitted a detailed report to the government on the loss suffered by the farmers. First instalmentBased on the report by the district administration, the government sanctioned a sum of Rs. 47.48 crore as first instalment to the district for the disbursement of compensation to the affected farmers. The fund is being distributed to the farmers through Kumbakonam Central Cooperative Bank. Crop insuredA total of 1.04 lakh small, medium and marginal paddy-cultivators, who have raised the second crop on 1.24 lakh hectares, have insured paddy under the ‘National Crop Insurance Scheme’ in the district. While about 93,000 farmers had insured the crop raised on 1.01 lakh hectares through the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks, about 11,000 farmers had brought 13,800 hectares under the scheme through commercial banks. Other cropsThe district administration has taken special efforts for insuring the other crops including groundnut, plantain, tapioca, black-gram, green-gram and other pulses. Seed, fertilizer stockAdequate stock of paddy seeds and fertilizers had been ensured in the district. About 171 tonnes had been stocked in the Agriculture Department’s depots and through private shops. A total of 3,515 tonnes of certified paddy seeds had been distributed for the ‘samba’ and ‘thaladi’ seasons in the district. While the Agriculture Department had distributed 1,585 tonnes, the balance 1,950 tonnes had been distributed through private dealers. District Revenue Officer A. Annadurai, Special Officer of Kumbakonam Central Cooperative Bank Loganathan and Joint Director of Agriculture Karunakaran were among those who participated in the meeting.
