Road, water, drainage pipeline works to be taken up in Tiruvottiyur

Work orders to be issued shortly for laying tar roads

Bid for construction of buildings, toilets get approval

CHENNAI: Putting an end to the impasse over awarding tenders for several works in the municipality, including laying of roads, water and drainage pipelines, and construction of buildings, the Tiruvottiyur Municipal Council has approved bids for the works totalling Rs. 2 crore at its recent meeting.

When the tenders were called for two months ago, councillors allegedly prevented the contractors from depositing their bids or did not agree to the quote or to the contractors.

Following this, Municipal Commissioner S. Ethiraj intervened, and the bids for two of three tenders were placed before the council for approval.

At the recent meeting, AIADMK councillor S. Kuppan said that bids for lower amounts should not be approved, as the contractors may not be able to complete the work. CPI (M) councillor Nagaraj said that it was the responsibility of the officials to ensure that the work was completed.

DMK councillor Kalaivanan told the meeting that if the bids were not approved then it would take another three months for fresh tenders to be floated.

With the general election schedule likely to be announced at that time, the projects would have to be put on hold.

Chairman R. Jayaraman called for a vote, and as none of the councillors opposed the resolution, it was adopted.

With the council approving the tender, work orders would be issued shortly to the contractors for laying tar roads in Sathyamurthy Nagar, Kalaingar Nagar and Janakiammal Estate, and drainage lines in Pir Bhailwan Durgah area.

The council also approved the bid for construction of buildings and toilets and commissioning of electrical work in schools belonging to the municipality.

The works would be undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs.57 lakh and spent from the education fund.
