Distribution of Pongal gifts begins

Tirupur: Distribution of free dhotis and saris and gift packets containing ingredients for making sweet pongal under a State Government scheme initiated in connection with the Pongal festival, commenced in Tirupur taluk on Thursday.
Official sources said that dresses as well as gift packets would be distributed to ration card holders through 172 full-time and 27 part-time operated Fair Price Shops functioning within the taluk limits, till January 14.
Coupons to procure dress materials had been distributed through respective Village Administrative Officers.
A total of 1,60,300 women and 1,50,115 men would get saris and dhotis, respectively, under the project.
The street-wise list of beneficiaries were displayed at the respective ration shops and offices of Village Administrative Officers. Only about 200 persons would be distributed the dresses daily.
The dates of distributions for beneficiaries in specific wards were publicized through Fair Price Shops.

Regarding the gift packets, sources said that a pack containing 500 gm of rice, 100 gm of green gram, 500 gm of jaggery, 10 gm of cashew and 5 gm each of cardamom and dry grapes would be given away to each of the 2,34,545 family card holders across the taluk.
A team under Revenue Divisional Officer P. Murugesh had been constituted to ensure smooth distribution of gifts.
