Parents plan to write to Ministry of Defence; may file for compensation

BANGALORE: The grief-stricken family of Mohammed Mukkaram Pasha (19), who died after being shot at by a military sentry at the premises of the Flag Staff House on December 25, will approach the Ministry of Defence demanding action against those who caused his death.

The family is likely to demand compensation and will be seeking stringent action against the sentry, who opened fire at Pasha. Emotionally choked parents of the youth — Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and Afsarunnissa — said at a press conference on Thursday: “The police and military officials are hiding crucial information about the episode, though Mukkaram was killed on December 25.” The family will fight for justice, Musthaq, a private bus operator, said.

Ms. Afsarunnissa, who collapsed while she addressed media persons, was taken into the chamber of advocate Vishnu Hegde.

“I need justice; only then will my son’s soul rest in peace”, she said. “Mukkaram was shot in the stomach instead of legs, . I have decided to fight for Mukkaram’s family,” said the advocate.

Pillion surfaces

Piecing together an important missing link in Mukkaram’s death, Shamsher, a resident of Lakkasandra, has said that he was on Mukkaram’s pillion when the police chased them near Trinity Circle.

“After we did our bike stunts on Old Airport Road and K.R. Puram Bridge, we were near Ulsoor Gurdwara, heading towards Domlur road. We realised that police were chasing us,” Shamsher told The Hindu.

While other bikers disappeared from the scene, he said that Mukkaram turned towards Trinity Church road where the police had put up barricades near ASC Circle. “The bike hit one of the barricades and we fell on the road.

“Both of us ran in different directions.

“I called Mukkaram twice on his mobile to be told that he was safe and also requested me to take care of myself.

“Later my mobile stopped functioning due to low battery. I woke up at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday and learnt that Mukkaram was shot in military firing,” Shamsheer said.
