THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police on Thursday recovered 10 country-made bombs and a sword from an abandoned house on the Valiyakulam road, near Karikkakom, in the Pettah police station limits. Acting on information received by Pettah Sub-Inspector A.S. Suresh Kumar at around 11 a.m., the police carried out a search in a dilapidated house and recovered 10 bombs and a sword. The house was uninhabited. The bombs were found neatly packed in two plastic covers and the sword in a sack and kept under a cot. The bomb disposal squad was called in to defuse the bombs. Forensic team and top police officials visited the spot. The bombs were highly powerful and capable of causing extensive damage and inflicting injuries. The Pettah police registered a case and started investigation. Girl hurt in blastA three-and-a-half-year-old girl from Tirunelveli suffered injuries when a country-made bomb, reportedly kept in a plastic bag in front of a footwear shop opposite the SMV Higher Secondary School, near Overbridge, exploded on Thursday. The child Manikumari from Town Market Street, had been admitted to the SAT Hospital. Her condition is reported to be stable. Santhi, who was along with the girl, escaped without injuries. The incident, that took place around 9.15 a.m., created panic as the school is one of the main venues of the ongoing 49th Kerala School Kalotsavam. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was also to proceed along the route. Top police officials, bomb disposal squad and forensic team visited the spot. The bomb was not that powerful to cause extensive damage, the police said. The Vanchiyoor police registered a case under the Explosives Act. Case against 50The police have registered a case against 50 persons for storming into the Valiayathura police station in the wee hours of Thursday and forcibly releasing four persons, including Alan, who were taken into custody for assaulting two youths on Wednesday. The incident took place around 3.45 a.m. when only two policemen were at the station. The mob stormed into the police station and forcibly released the four. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shanghumughom, Sanal Kumar said cases were registered against four persons in connection with the assault and against 50 others under various sections for storming into the police station.
