Measure aims at bringing down accidents and head on collisions

PREVENTION IS BETTER: Superintendent of Police P. Moorthy pasting a reflector on a bus in Pudukottai on Thursday.

PUDUKOTTAI: The Transport Department, in co-ordination with non-governmental organisations, police and State Transport Corporation officials, has taken up special measures to paste bull’s eye on the headlights, X-posters on the front glass-panes and fix reflectors at the rear of heavy vehicles in the district.

Forming part of the ‘Road Safety Week’ programme, the measure aims at bringing down accidents.

Talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the inaugural of the ‘Road Safety Week’ programme in the district, Regional Transport Officer N. Balagurunathan said that a co-ordinated effort would be launched throughout the week to cover all heavy vehicles in the district. On Thursday alone, reflectors and bull’s eye were fitted on about 120 heavy vehicles in the town.

Eye camp

Emphasising the need for proper vision for drivers to avert accidents, he said that a special eye camp would be held at the Public Office Campus here on Friday. Drivers of autorickshaws, heavy vehicles, vans and minivans would be screened.

Earlier, Superintendent of Police P. Moorthy inaugurated the work on pasting of ‘X’ reflectors on the front windscreens of heavy vehicles.

Deputy Superintendent of Police C. Palanichamy and the Motor Vehicle Inspectors S. Saravanan and S. Karthikeyan spoke on the importance of these reflectors in ensuring proper visibility during the night and averting accidents.
