CHENNAI: The Amar Seva Sangam, a non-governmental organisation working for the cause of persons with disabilities, was on Thursday conferred the “Hamsadhwani R. Ramachandran Award of Excellence.”

Presenting the award which carries a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs.10,000, former Chief Election Commissioner T.S.Krishnamurthi paid rich tributes to the memory of R.Ramachandran, Hamsadhwani’s founder secretary, who was fondly called as RRC. He recalled RRC’s memory, his immense knowledge and organising abilities in regularly conducting music festivals.

He said that the Amar Seva Sangam truly deserved the award and recognition for the kind of service they were doing for the disabled.

Exnora International founder M.B.Nirmal recalled how Ramachandran had helped him to lead the Indira Nagar Civic Exnora’s functioning.

“The residents of Indira Nagar area were not cooperating at that time and we were struggling to start the Civic Exnora. RRC suggested that we start a music organisation, which the residents wanted and in return urged them to collect garbage,” he said.

Amar Seva Sangam honorary secretary S.Sankara Raman thanked Hamsadhwani for recognising his organisation. He said that if the capabilities of persons with disabilities were brought out they could shine.

Hamsadhwani secretary and son of R. Ramachandran, R. Sundar said that the first Hamsadhwani R.Ramachandran Award was presented to The Hindu Editor-in-Chief N.Ram last year. Hamsadhwani Secretary T.R.Gopalan and president R. Subramaniam, spoke.
