No movement: LPG tankers parked at Karuppur, near Salem, as the indefinite strike called by the Southern Region LPG Bulk Transport Owners Association began on Thursday. —

NAMAKKAL: Over 3,500 bulk LPG tankers kept off the road as the indefinite strike called by the Southern Region LPG Bulk Transport Owners Association began from the midnight of December 31. The association called the strike urging the oil companies to increase the transportation charges. Tanker operators were asking the oil companies to provide at least Rs. 2.90 per kilometre as transportation charges. The second round of talks held in this regard at Chennai recently ended without reaching a settlement. Association president Ponnambalam said the oil companies offered only Rs. 1.89 per km during the second round of talks. The tanker owners demanded the companies to increase the charges as the cost of operating the vehicles had gone up.

Association members said the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas to various bottling plants in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry and Karnataka was affected due to the strike.
