Over 100 check dams to come up in villages soon

Staff Reporter

They will be located at the foothills of the Kolli Hills

NAMAKKAL: The district administration will initiate steps to construct over 100 check dams in various villages located in the foothills of Kolli Hills.

Sharing this information at the farmers’ grievances redressal day meeting held at the Salem Co-operative Sugar Mills at Mohanur near here on Tuesday, Collector U. Sagayam said the check dams would be constructed through the agricultural engineering department.

These structures would help harvest rainwater effectively and improve the ground water table.

Efforts were also taken up to desilt 37 lakes and a number of water carrying channels in the district shortly. Encroachments on all the water bodies and water carrying channels would be removed, he added.

Mr. Sagayam further said that stern action would be initiated against the traders if they were found selling fertilizers at higher prices than those fixed.

Earlier, farmers complained at the meeting that a few fertilizer traders in the district were not following the Government-fixed prices and were selling the products at higher rates. They wanted the Government to fix Rs. 2,000 as price per tonne of sugar cane.

A few farmers appealed to the administration to prevent the discharge of untreated sewage from Mohanur, Vengarai, Pondamangalam Podanur and Velur town panchayats into irrigation canals. They asked the local administrations to construct sewage treatment plants immediately.

Kabilamalai MLA K. Nedunchezhiyan, District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj, Sugar Mill Special Officer Manickam and senior officials attended the meeting.
