HONOURS: S.S. Siddareddy (left), winner of the Dr. P.S. Shankar Vaidyasri Award, Vinod Chebbi and C. Sharatkumar, winners of the Dr. P.S. Shankar Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Award, at a function in Gulbarga on Thursday. GULBARGA: Family physician S.S. Siddareddy was on Thursday presented the Vaidyasri Award instituted by the Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishthan at a function to mark the ninth anniversary of the pratishthan here. The award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a commendation certificate, a citation and a shawl was presented to Dr. Siddareddy, founder-president of the Bidar unit of the Family Planning Association of India who successfully promoted small family norms among the poor and economically weaker sections of society in Bidar. The award was presented by poet and writer B.A. Sannadi and president of the Sri Kottala Basaveshwar Bharatiya Shikshana Samiti Basavaraj Patil Sedam. Two medical professionals, Bangalore-based sexologist Vinod Chebbi and Mysore-based C. Sharatkumar, were awarded the Dr. P.S. Shankar Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Award for their books, “Laingigathe-Vividha Ayamagalu” and “Arogya Nudi”, respectively. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each, a commendation certificate, a shawl and citation. Along with them, first year MBBS students Sneha Yeshvant Kumar studying in the Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences and Ashwini Kollur from Okaly village in Gulbarga taluk were given away cheques of monthly scholarship provided by the P.S. Shankar Pratishtan and Dr. Indira Verabhadrappa Medical Scholarship. The pratishthan donated medical books worth Rs. 11,000 to the library of the Chennabasaveshwar Gurukul Education Society at Karadyal village in Bhalki taluk in Bidar district. Speaking after giving away the awards, Dr. Sannadi lauded the pratishthan for doing signal service to the cause of medical literature and helping poor students to pursue medical education. Born in Korwar village in Sindagi taluk in Bijapur district, Dr. Siddareddy chose the backward Bidar district to serve after a brief stint in government service. Dr. Siddareddy successfully propagated small family norms without any force among the poor, and helped women with bank loans to become self-sufficient. The two doctors who won the Dr. P.S. Shankar Shresta Vaidya Sahitya Award have carved a niche in the world of medicine. Dr. Chebbi has written a number of articles on various issues, including sexuality and sexual problems, which have been published in many newspapers and journals. He is a consulting sexologist in Bangalore. Dr. Sharatkumar originally hailing from Tumkur is now settled in Mysore. He has written books in Kannada on issues such as infertility and cancer.
