Ajmal booked under three more Acts

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police on Wednesday booked Mohammed Ajmal Amir Iman, the lone terrorist caught alive during last month’s terror strikes here, under three more Acts.

“Ajmal has been booked under Customs Act, Foreigners Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act [UAPA] in addition to sections of Indian Penal Code applied on him,” Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), said here.

Ajmal, who was caught on November 26 night, is already facing charges such as criminal conspiracy, waging war against the country, murder, attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, assault and use of criminal force.

Ajmal has also been booked under the Arms Act, Customs Act and the Foreigners Act.

Delhi lawyer’s offer

A Delhi-based lawyer on Wednesday offered to appear for Ajmal.

The lawyer said that he wanted to take up the legal battle on behalf of Ajmal as his trial would get vitiated without a counsel and could lead to his acquittal on this ground in higher courts.

Judicial custody

Lashkar operatives Fahim Ansari and Mohammad Sabahuddin were on Wednesday remanded to judicial custody till January 12 in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks.

The Mumbai police did not seek their custody.

The two had earlier been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police for carrying out an attack on the CRPF Group Centre in Rampur.

Arrested

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested an alleged member of Indian Mujahideen (IM) in Pune on Tuesday, an official source said.

Hussain Shabbir Meheruddin Gangavli, 30, a resident of Karnataka, was arrested for possession of fake currency, said ATS chief K.P. Raghuvanshi.

“So far no link with IM has emerged. He is being questioned.” — PTI
