Plea to increase Wakf Board administrative grant

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Wakf Board has urged the government to increase its administrative grant to Rs. 1 crore from the present Rs. 45 lakh.

Addressing a press conference, Board chairperson S. Hyder Ali also appealed to the government to consider constituting a welfare board for ‘Ulemas,’ or those employed at mosques. He also sought setting up of hostels on vacant government land for Muslim students.

Mr. Ali sought urgent steps to remove encroachments from Wakf Board property.

The government had sanctioned Rs. 52 lakh during 2007-2008 and Rs.60 lakh during 2008-2009 for renovating mosques, and with the sum, 73 mosques were renovated, he said.
