Tatas, Oberois seek CISF cover

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Tatas and Oberois, whose hotels were attacked by terrorists, had approached the Home Ministry for security cover to their establishments by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Infosys and the Jamnagar Refinery of Reliance had also approached the government seeking CISF security

This was stated by Home Minister P. Chidambaram at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Mr. Chidambaram pointed out that Parliament had passed the Criminal Procedure Code Amendment Bill and the Central Industrial Security Force (Amendment) Bill and the Land Ports Authority Bill were introduced.

Enabling extension

“The CISF (Amendment) Bill is part of the package of legal measures that are required to enhance security. The amendment Bill is intended to enable extension of the CISF cover to industrial establishments in the joint sector and private sector,” he said.

Mr. Chidambaram announced that a round-the-clock information gathering and sharing centre on terrorism had become operational from Wednesday. The Multi Agency Centre (MAC) was established in the Intelligence Bureau as the nodal centre, but it had not been able to fully achieve its objectives.

“Hence, it was decided that a legal colour be given to the order establishing the MAC.

Executive order

Accordingly, an executive order has been issued, under which the MAC has been obliged to share intelligence with all other intelligence agencies of the State governments, Union Territories. Likewise, all other agencies have been obliged to share intelligence with the MAC.”

Subsidiaries of the MAC were set up in many State capitals and in due course these would be established in every State capital, he said.
