Thrissur: An emergency meeting of health officials called by District Collector V.K. Baby has decided to intensify the preventive measures against outbreak of jaundice in the district. Local bodies were asked to keep vigil against spread of disease. District/panchayat-level committees would be formed to monitor the situation. District medical officer V. Divakaran said the situation was under control. According to the District Medical Office sources, about 50 cases of jaundice have been confirmed so far in the district, of which 30 victims were students of St. Thomas college hostel. A meeting of block-level health supervisors would be held on Thursday at District Medical Office to chalk out effective prevention programme. Meanwhile, the corporation has asked the health officials to take stringent actions against hotels, including cancellation of licence, if they failed to adhere to quality standards. It is the duty of hotel owners to ensure that only clean and boiled water was supplied at their shops, the corporation authorities said. Food vigilance squads have started surprise raids on eateries on Wednesday. The raid would continue in the coming days too, health officials said. However, health officials did not get any clue about the source of infection at St. Thomas College. Water samples from affected areas were sent for laboratory test and steps have already been taken to chlorinate the wells, they said. The officials started door-to-door awareness campaign on prevention methods against jaundice.
