Chennai: Goals from M. Elamurugan, M. David and S. Fredy helped Indian Bank cruise to a 3-0 win over Tamil Nadu Special Police in the St. Joseph’s-CFA Senior Division football league here on Tuesday. The scoreline came about thanks to the efforts of Indian Bank’s wide players, in particular Bengkok Nameirakpam, who was moved to left midfield from the left back position he had occupied against State Bank of India. In the 26th minute, TNSP keeper P. Sathyanarayanan spilled one such cross onto the feet of Elamurugan, who couldn’t have miss even if he had wanted to. Twelve minutes later, the ball fell to Bengkok on the left edge of the box, from where the ball followed an arc that ended at the thrusting head of David, making a diagonal run from the right. The goalie got a hand to it, but could only deflect it onto the inside of the far post, off which it went in. Six minutes after half-time, Indian Bank put an end to whatever little hope TNSP may have harboured of a comeback. K.V. Gunasekar’s corner from the left flag was cleared straight back at him. Opening his foot just so, Gunasekar diverted the ball on the volley to the far post, where David pounced, his header shooting across the scrambling goalkeeper, giving him no chance of making the save.
