VISAKHAPATNAM: Leaders of the Telugu Desam, the CPI and the CPI(M) have called for a united struggle to prevent the Congress from regaining power in the State. At a district-level combined political conference at Subbalakshmi Kalyana Mandapam on Tuesday, they felt that they should sink their differences and prevent splitting of votes. Telugu Desam Polit Bureau member Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said the Rajasekhara Reddy government that was making tall claims of ‘Rythu Rajyam’ had failed to provide quality fertilizers and seed to the farmers. When farmers in Khammam demanded seed, false cases were booked against them branding them as ‘bandits’. He alleged that the Congress Government had modified the Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies Act (MACS) to gain unfair advantage in the elections to the cooperative dairies in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. Mr. Venkateswarlu predicted that the water projects launched by the Rajasekhara Reddy Government would join the list of ‘pending projects’ as only Rs.36 crores was spent in the last four and a half years while thousands of crores remains to be spent. ‘Empty promises’Referring to the Congress promise of pucca houses to the poor, he said that 17 lakh houses have been constructed as against the promised 80 lakh houses. Even those 17 lakhs included those that were constructed during the previous Government. CPI State leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao justified the alliance of the Left parties with the Telugu Desam. He said that the Left had supported the Congress in the last elections with the sole objective of preventing the BJP from coming to power. ‘Secular party’Bhadrachalam MP Midium Babu Rao said that the Left had supported the Congress as it was a secular party. The Congress Government had failed to live up to the expectations of the Left as it was pursuing the same old policies of the BJP. It had ignored the opposition of the Left against the nuclear deal and was bowing to the diktats of the US and the World Bank. Former MP MVVS Murthy, TDP Rural District president Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy, Chintapalle MLA Demudu, CPI(M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao and CPI-M leader K. Lokanadham were among those who spoke. CPI District secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy presided. TDP leaders M. Mani Kumari, G. Nagamani, RSDP Appala Narasimha Raju, Shoba Hymavathi and Palla Suryanarayana were present.
