History congress calls for peace

Special Correspondent

KANNUR: The three-day 69th session of the Indian History Congress on the Kannur University campus at Mangattuparamba here drew to a close on Tuesday with a plea that peace and amity among the countries of the subcontinent not be disturbed even as it demanded that no one directly or indirectly responsible for the Mumbai terror attack go undetected and unpunished.

Expressing grief at the loss of innocent lives in the recent terror attack, “which has been preceded by violent incidents of the kind at numerous other places,” the resolution urged the government to ensure that the purpose of the perpetrators was not aided by disturbance of peace and amity among the countries. Another resolution seeking release of documents on contemporary history called for measures to transfer papers amassed in government files to the national and State archives in conformity with rules adopted in many other countries and the Right to Information Act.

The closing session of the IHC elected office-bearers of the congress for the next term. R. Champakalaxmi, retired Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, was elected president.
