Theatre festival inaugurated

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: A three-day theatre festival organised to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Indian freedom struggle was inaugurated here on Tuesday by R. Nagesh, former president of Karnataka Nataka Academy. The theatre festival has been organised by the Union Ministry of Culture and Department of Kannada and Culture.

Addressing the audience at the inaugural function, Mr. Nagesh said that the plays chosen for the festival were not ordinary plays.

“These three plays — ‘Sultan Tippu’, ‘Kittur Rani Chennamma’ and ‘Hey Ram’ — are special and have been enacted by various theatre groups across the country,” he said.

B.V. Rajaram, president of the academy, said that the “a play a month” scheme would be re-introduced on January 8 with the staging of ‘Ratna Pakshi’, a children’s play.
