Government to press for IIT in State

BANGALORE: The State Government will continue to appeal to the Centre to sanction an Indian Institute of Technology for Karnataka, Aravind Limbavali, Minister for Higher Education, told academics and industry representatives gathered at the round table conference here on Tuesday.

The conference was aimed at garnering support and opinion about the need for an IIT to be commissioned in the State.

“By stating that the presence of Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) in Bangalore will suffice, the Union Government is depriving Karnataka of a much-needed institute,” Mr. Limbavali ssaid.

Organised by M.R. Doreswamy, MLC and Chairman of the PES group of institutions, several academics such as U.R. Rao, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisations (ISRO), H.N. Ananth Kumar, MP, Rama Jois and others participated.

‘Unfair’

“In 1997, when I headed the committee which decided on the location of IITs, Andhra Pradesh was chosen over Karnataka, even though it was one of the most suitable options. Now the Union Government’s argument is unfair and selection of location shouldn’t be geographical,” Prof. Rao said.
