Sheila directive to check tax evasion

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reviewed the functioning of the Delhi Government’s Department of Finance and Planning at a high-level meeting here on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by Finance Minister A. K. Walia, Principal Secretary (Finance) V. V. Bhatt, Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary P. K. Tripathi, Commissioner (Trade and Taxes) Archana Arora and other senior officials.

Ms. Dikshit discussed the revenue position in view of the ongoing recession. She directed the officials to make effective and foolproof checks at the Capital’s borders to curb tax evasion. It was also decided to encourage dealers who have been sincere in filing their returns and showing good growth in collections. The Department of Trade and Taxes would also strive hard to register all dealers.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need for effective monitoring of Plan schemes. She also discussed availability of funds for the 2010 Commonwealth Games projects.

It was decided that works of absolute necessity and unavoidable nature would not be allowed to suffer or face any delay as hosting of the Commonwealth Games would definitely enhance the image of the State Government.

The Government will seek additional Central assistance for the Commonwealth Games.
