VANIYAMBADI: Natrampalli panchayat union in Vellore district is making all efforts to recharge groundwater. Though steps are being taken, more funds are needed to cover the villages that are still facing drought-like situation.
Vijayalakshmi Sampathkumar, chairperson, Natrampalli panchayat union, told The Hindu that drinking water problem was being addressed, thanks to the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.
However, there were still several villages including Pachur, Kutoor and Kondakandapalli where there was severe water scarcity and required more funds to tackle the situation.
Last year, the district administration allotted Rs.62 lakh as drought relief fund and works were taken up in the panchayat union, Ms. Sampathkumar said.
As drought relief measures, 10 works were to be completed. . The district administration, after taking stock of the situation, allotted an additional sum of Rs.8 lakh for the work, which would be completed before Pongal. The money released was from the Collector’s fund. Ms. Sampathkumar said that digging of tanks helped to recharge groundwater. All 26 panchayats were to get a tank. So far, 15 panchayats had been covered under the scheme.
