‘e-way’ to challan traffic violators

New Delhi: The Delhi police will soon go the ‘e-way’ to challan traffic violators.

The traffic wing of city police is procuring nearly 650 hand-held devices working on GPRS or CDMA which could retrieve relevant data relating to previous offences committed by the driver or the vehicle from its database.

Besides this, police are also planning a “dynamic web portal” for providing traffic-related services to general public and senior officers.

The device is being procured to help policemen to get the past record of the driver and vehicle on the basis of vehicle number, name of the driver, parentage and driver’s licence details, a senior police officer said.

“It will help the challaning officer to know about the previous offences committed by the driver or pending challans on the vehicle. It could also help in knowing the previous prosecution history for purposes of enhanced fines.”

The device should enable the policemen to know whether the vehicle involved in a traffic rule violation is stolen, the previous history of vehicle or driver in accidents or whether any notice from traffic police is pending against the vehicle, the officer said.

“We are looking for an e-challaning system which would be able to print challans, both in English and Hindi, and forward it to courts,” he said.

Each device should also be capable of acting as a payment receiving station for any challan or notice generated by any other device and issue receipt, he said. A tender has been floated for procuring these devices, the official said, adding that a web portal will also be set up for providing various traffic related services. — PTI
