Second phase of polio vaccination on February 1

1.2 lakh deliveries performed in primary health centres this year 35 taluk hospitals to be improved in various districts in the State
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The second phase of pulse polio campaign would be held on February 1 and a public awareness campaign would be conducted by the department prior to it, said Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) V. K. Subburaj here on Monday.
He said that 1.2 lakh deliveries had been performed in primary health centres all over the State during the year.
An average of 17 deliveries took place per PHC per month.
He said that 70 children had been operated for heart ailments in Virudhunagar and Sivakasi health districts and all of them were doing well.
Mr. Subburaj said that 35 taluk hospitals in Theni, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Kanykumari and Pudukottai districts would be improved, followed by 220 hospitals, at a cost of Rs.300 crore in a phased manner.
Improvements to buildings and procurement of medical equipment had been taken up in government hospitals at a cost of Rs.600 crore. Adequate medical staff had been appointed in all the districts.
Mr. Subburaj made a surprise check at Virudhunagar Government Hospital after participating in the launch of ‘Dial 108’ emergency ambulance service.
During his inspection, S. Vijayakumar, Project Director (Health Systems), was present.
