What they say
D.K.R. Kalpana
S. Shibi, councillor, Oulgaret Municipality:
Use of plastic bags and cups should be banned in Puducherry.
Manual removal of garbage should be replaced by the use of machinery and training should be given to the conservancy workers to bring a change in their attitude towards their job.
At present, garbage is cleared for six days and the situation will improve if garbage is collected on Sundays too.
Moreover, the vehicles used to transport garbage are very old and should be replaced.
S. Baskaran, councillor, Puducherry Municipality:
Private companies can be roped in for the solid waste management programme.
The works, starting from garbage collection, disposal and treatment, can be handed over to a private agency.
A treatment plant can be set up in the outskirts of the town.
Awareness among public is also very important to streamline garbage collection and disposal.
D.K.R. Kalpana, resident of Thengaithittu:
Continuous dumping of garbage causes ill effects such as pollution, health problems, mosquito breeding, affects quality of soil and prevents flow of water into the ground.
The government should take initiatives for proper disposal of solid waste such as recycling of waste and avoiding use of plastic.
