SALEM: Distance education plays a vital role in improving access to higher education to a large number of people in the country, Annamalai University Vice-Chancellor M. Ramanathan has said. Participating at the silver jubilee celebrations of the varsity’s Salem Study Centre here on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor said only about 10 per cent of the population in the country was able to get an access to higher education. The existing higher educational institutions could not provide higher education to all the people under the regular mode. With the distance education, it is possible to reach out to the people in the remote villages too. The development of human resources is essential to accelerate the growth of the country. To achieve this, people should be provided more opportunities to pursue higher education, he said. The varsity’s directorate of distance education had successfully established study centres at various parts in the country and was offering a variety of courses for the people, he added. Varsity’s Distance Education Director S.B. Nageswararao, presiding over the celebrations, highlighted the programmes offered under the distance mode. Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini spoke. Special officer, Cooperative Department S. Ramadass, Officers-in-Charge G. Vallarasi and P. Vijayan were present.
