No veterans’ team this

New Delhi: While football clubs round the globe are scouting talented youngsters, here’s one team in India which is trying to buck the trend.

Haryana Power Sports Group, which plays in the Haryana Football League, has a team whose youngest member is 42 and the oldest 58.

They may not exactly be the golden oldies, but they can give youngsters a run for their money. And none is more revered than Sumesh Bagga.

Lot of heart

Agreed, the quality of opposition in Haryana may not be that good but playing 90 minutes in any condition takes a lot of heart and more.

The 58-year-old Bagga is a striker and has represented Haryana 22 times in the Santosh Trophy. He has also coached the State team twice.

“I think the standard of football has become so poor that people like me can still play,” a candid Bagga said.

He has had two clots in his brain following a head injury some four years back.

He took to the field against doctor’s advice because as Bagga says “it is a bug which I can’t get rid off”. He had to pay a price though. “At times I can’t remember things. But that won’t stop me from playing,” said Bagga. — PTI
