CHENNAI: Sankara Nethralaya on Saturday honoured some of its patrons and well-wishers by presenting them with the Friends of Sankara Nethralaya Award.

The recipients included violin maestro T.N. Krishnan, who performed 10 benefit concerts across the U.S. in 2007 to mobilise funds for Sankara Nethralaya. His son Sriram Krishnan performed 10 jugalbandhi concerts this year to raise funds for the institution.

Other awardees felicitated by Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman, Cognizant Technology Services, on Saturday evening were: J. Jayaraman, former Chairman and Managing Director, Cochin Refineries; Mohan Rajan, alumnus and medical director, Rajan Eye Care Hospital; G.V. Raman, S. Raghavan and S.N. Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan said that all donors had faith in the ability of Sankara Nethralaya to contribute to the eradication of preventable blindness. He laid stress on the relevance of technology in reaching the goal. He had made a personal donation to the hospital as also had the Cognizant Foundation.

V.Vaidyanathan, secretary, Medical Research Foundation, honoured artist and writer Manohar Devadoss, who had raised funds for the institution by selling his sketches. Mr. Devadoss planned to institute an endowment in memory of his wife Mahima and is at present raising funds for the project.

S.S. Badrinath, chairman emeritus, Medical Research Foundation, urged members in the audience to take to others the message of the need for funds to continue the work being done by Sankara Nethralaya. He recalled the organisation’s association with noted advocate and economist Nani Phalkiwala and his wife Nargis, the couple after whom one of the blocks in the new building had been named.

Lingam Gopal, chairman, Medical Research Foundation, and Tarun Sharma, director, Shri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreoretinal Services, Sankara Nethralaya, and Dr. Rajan, spoke. The function was followed by a jugalbandhi concert, performed by Snehashish Mazumdar, Sriram Krishnan, Subrata Bhattacharya and Rajsekar.
