Give up SETC merger: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday urged the State government to give up the proposed move to transfer the buses of the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) to other transport corporations.

In a statement here she claimed that in a meeting of the managing directors of the transport corporations it had been decided to merge the services of the SETC buses that operated within 450 km to other corporations. Thus 384 buses and routes would be merged, she claimed.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said that the merger would defeat the object behind the creation of the SETC: reaching the destination on time.

She argued the passengers would spurn the services of the buses and opt for trains if the proposed move took place. “It will cause enormous loss to the corporations. Moreover transfer of the employees will affect their families,” she said.
