KULITHALAI: The district administration would take steps to clear the water sources including lakes and ponds of all encroachments, District Collector J. Umamaheswari assured the farming community at the grievances day meeting held here on Friday. Dr. Umamaheswari observed that a report on the status of the water sources would be prepared. Then a discussion would follow among Agriculture, PWD and other department officials as also the farmers. After that, efforts would be taken to clear the water bodies of encroachments before the next monsoon, so that the maximum quantum of water could be harnessed and utilized optimally, she opined. Convener of the Farmers’ Discussion Group, Valayapatti, R. Satheesh, urged the administration to take steps to implement the National Horticulture Development Project in the district. The Collector said proposals have been forwarded to the government for implementing programmes under NHDP. Another farmer N.S. Ponnusamy of Nerur wanted the officials to expedite disbursal of Kisan credit card and identity card as members of the Agricultural Labourers’ Welfare Board. Convener of the Kulithalai Farmers’ Discussion Group, A.V. Gopaladesikan, wanted the officials to desilt the irrigation channels that crisscross the Kulithalai town. Replying to that query, Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD, River Conservancy Division, N. Jothimani, pointed out that there were encroachments and with the cooperation from the Revenue Department, the encroachments would be cleared and then the channels would be desilted. Pallapalayam Raja Vaikkal Aycutdars Association president K. Palanisamy wanted the PWD Amaravathy Basin Division officials to ensure water supply till the standing crops were saved. Officials replied that the present storage level at the Amaravathy Dam was satisfactory. Kudaganaru River Aycutdars’ Association, Moolapatti, K.S. Thangavel wanted the officials to raise the level of bank on either side of the Kudaganaru reservoir at Nagampalli in Karur district.Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association working president Mahadanapuram V. Rajaram, deputy secretary Kavandampatti R. Subramanian, president of the Sugarcane Growers’ Association, Nachalur Anbalagan, participated.
