Christmas brings back cheer to market

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Christmas-New Year celebrations have brought some cheer to the market which otherwise has been witnessing a dull run for more than three months.

Daily provisions, bakery, meat and fish markets are witnessing brisk business as the season peaks. On the eve of Christmas major consumer outlets have recorded significant increase in sales.

The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco), a major presence in the provisions market, has been in the forefront of holding the price line. Supplyco outlets are selling most items, including sugar, pulses, masala mixtures, turmeric and coriander, at prices well below the open market rate. The Corporation kept open all its 292 Labham Supermarkets and People’s Bazaars open till the eve of Christmas.

Special Christmas Metro Fairs were held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Thrissur while special counters were opened at all the Supplyco outlets. According to Supplyco sources, sugar is being sold at Rs.19 a kg. (Rs.20 in the open market), green gram at Rs.28 (Rs.43 in the open market), Bengal gram at Rs.27 (Rs.36), peas dal at Rs.18 a kg (Rs.32), red chilly at Rs.45 a kg (Rs.73) and coriander at Rs.69 a kg (Rs.74 in the open market).

In the bakery market, while the small and local players appear to be hit by the deceleration in the market, branded items are selling well.

The price increase of about 15 per cent this season compared to last has not happened during this festive season. The increase has taken place over the whole year, said those involved in bakery business. The Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development (Matsyafed) has done brisk business over the last couple of days.
