Commando force, STF to be modernised, says DGP

Staff Reporter

12 marine police stations have been operationalised

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Commando Force, Chennai, and Special Task Force, Sathyamangalam, will be expanded and modernised to combat terror attacks, said K.P. Jain, Director General of Police, here on Thursday.

Mr. Jain said the forces lacked sophisticated equipment and operational skills as compared to National Security Guards (NSG). As per the III Tamil Nadu Police Commission recommendations, additional funds were being provided, besides basic modernisation package for equipping these forces.

Many of the commission’s recommendations accepted by the government were being implemented. One of the major recommendations included expansion of the State Police force at all levels.

On the Coastal Security also there was modernisation and expansion.

Already 12 marine police stations had become operational with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Mr. Jain said.

To a query whether Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) would be roped in for the Thirumangalam by-poll, Mr. Jain said the situation was being reviewed. The local police would be competent to handle and if need be the CPMF assistance would be sought.

As per the police commission’s recommendations, the strength of the force would be increased by another 50,000 in the constabulary and sub-ordinate cadre and 10,000 in the other special wings. Attempts by naxalites to gain foothold in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Theni and Dindigul districts had been thwarted.
