RIGHT TO PROBE: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission chairman S.R. Nayak (second from left) at the Hanumantha Nagar Police Station in Bangalore on Friday, where a man died in custody. BANGALORE: State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairman S.R. Nayak on Friday took serious exception to the differing statements of the police regarding Thursday’s custodial death at the Hanumantha Nagar police station. Reacting to the varying versions of the police, Mr. Nayak reminded them they were talking to a statutory commission and that they must do so responsibly. “You cannot say whatever you want,” he told them. On Thursday evening, V. Bhaskar (27), a data entry operator at a travel agency on D.V.G. Road in Basavanagudi, allegedly involved in six theft cases, was found hanging in a room at the police station. Assistant sub-inspector Chikkanna, who was the in-charge Station House Officer on Thursday, has been reported to be absconding since Bhaskar’s death. “We are trying to trace him,” inspector Vijay Kumar told the SHRC. On Friday, Mr. Nayak and SHRC Inspector-General of Police Bipin Gopalakrishna inspected the police station. While one of the police personnel said Bhaskar was inside the lockup, another said he was sitting outside even as the sentry said no one was brought for interrogation. Head constable Geethalakshmi said she left the station around 5.20 p.m. on Thursday when Bhaskar was alive. But Assistant sub-inspector Bettegowda said Geethalakshmi was in the station till 7 p.m. These statements annoyed Mr. Nayak who said the police personnel could not violate Bhaskar’s rights. Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Ravi said Bhaskar was caught while stealing coins from a telephone booth at Narihalla near Srinivasanagar on Wednesday afternoon. “Bhaskar had been arrested by the Commercial Street police in 2006 and in that station too he had tried to commit suicide. Hereafter, all police stations will be instructed to exercise utmost caution to prevent such an occurrence,” he said.
