PUDUKOTTAI: A special 100-day literacy programme for women in the age-group of 15-35 years will commence in 11 select villages in the district on the New Year’s Day, for registering a growth in women literacy percentage. Forming part of the Continuing Education Programme (CEP), the pilot project, to be implemented through the activity-based learning (ABL) methodology, will benefit as many as 709 women. ABL materialsPaying a serious attention to the gap in the literacy percentage between men and women, the State government had decided to implement the project in select hamlets in every block in the State. Realising the pedagogical efficacy of the ABL materials evolved by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan programme, the government has decided to supply the same materials to these centres, the District Project Co-ordinator, CEP, V. Ramalingam, told ‘The Hindu’ here on Wednesday. He said that the district’s literacy percentage for men and women was 83.22 and 60.94 respectively. The implementation of the pilot project would be emulated at other centres, based on its success. The beneficiaries would be taught the basic components of Mathematics and Tamil subjects during the period. Village monitoring committeeRural high school students, volunteers and local teachers would also handle the special coaching sessions. A ‘village monitoring committee’ comprising the headmaster of a local school and other volunteers, has been constituted for ensuring regular attendance of women beneficiaries during the course. The following villages under the corresponding blocks have been identified for the project: Mannavelanpatti (Annavasal); Alankudi (Arimalam); Periyalur (Aranthangi); Amaradakki (Avudaiyarkovil); Meenampatti (Karambakudi); Pudhu Nagar (Gandarvakottai); Aradipatti (Kundrandarkovil); Panayapatti (Tirumayam); Pallathu Viduthi (Tiruvarankulam); Mela Viduthi (Pudukottai); Semboothi (Ponnamaravathy); Kattumavadi (Manamelkudi) and Suriyur (Viralimalai), Mr. Ramalingam, told ‘The Hindu’ here on Friday.
