KARAIKAL: The indefinite strike by Agricultural officers in Karaikal and other areas in Puducherry entered the fifth day, with the officers also threatening an indefinite hunger strike on Monday if their demands were not met by the government.

K. Sajith Kumar, secretary of the Puducherry Agricultural Graduate Officers Welfare Association (PAGA), said in a press release that the association had repeatedly submitted notices to the Agriculture department to revise the pay scale and provide gazetted status to agricultural officers among other demands.

The first notice had been sent in October, followed by two others in November. Since the Department had not acted on the association’s demands, the officers had decided to go on an indefinite strike, the release said.

The release added that the recent havoc caused by the floods could not be handled efficiently because long-standing demands were not met.

To relieve the situation, the officers demanded that all vacant positions should be filled up with specialists in the particular field.

They also asked that the Karaikal Krishi Vigyan Kendra principal should be replaced by an eligible officer from the agriculture department.

Leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly A.M.H. Nazeem talked to the striking officers and assured an amicable solution, S. Kandamoorthy, joint secretary, PAGA said.
