Sania’s advice to kidsSania Mirza surprised the few youngsters who turned up at the GVK Tennis Academy (Jubilee Hills) with her warmth and caring attitude and dished out a few simple lessons to them. The occasion was the first anniversary of the Academy, set up by GVK Group of Industries to promote sport on a non-commercial basis with the help of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. “When I was young, I had to virtually plead with some youngsters to play with me. Now, it is the other way round. There are so many eagerly awaiting their turn. This is a very good sign of the growing popularity of the sport here,” Sania remarked. “My advice to all of you is to play the game only if you enjoy it. “Then, you can be a much better player than Sania Mriza,” she said amidst applause. G.V. Krishna Reddy said the success of a child in sports depended on parental support at the right time. “I can confidently say that Sania is what she is today because of her mother Naseema and then her father Imran. “They used to be there at the tennis court at 5.30 a.m. along with the kid,” he said. B.S. Krishna Reddy, chairman of the Academy, said they had approached the GHMC to allot more space to enable them to have four more courts and later convert the Academy into an international standard training centre. Ilyas Ghouse, Academy chief coach, hoped that more and more gifted players would emerge from the academy and try to emulate Sania Mirza’s achievements.
