COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Friday claimed to have captured Mulliyawalai Township located along the A-34 Oddusudan-Mullathivu main road and killed several LTTE cadre after hours of heavy fighting. The Defence Ministry said here soldiers captured an LTTE communication tower located north of Mulliyawalai. “Three fortified overhead bunkers constructed in defence of the tower with a height of 40 ft showed its significance to the LTTE in maintaining communication between their bases”. “Terrorist resistances in Mullathivu are disintegrating with the intense military armour, artillery and infantry assaults,” it said adding that the troops had also closed-in on Tanniyuttu, an LTTE stronghold near the A-34 main road. “Terrorists being cut-off of both reinforcements and logistic supplies are receiving heavy beating from the advancing military flanks either side of the Eastern Mullathivu battlefront.” The Ministry said the capture of Mulliyawalai is expected to trigger the fall of Tanniyuttu. Fighter jets were said to have made precision attacks on an LTTE training base located in general area Piramantalkulam, north of the Paranthan-Puthukkudiyirripu road in Kilinochchi. The pro-LTTE TamilNet said two Army artillery shells landed in the compound of the Kilinochchi General Hospital on Thursday damaging three buildings. Several hospital staff, including the Medical Superintendent of Kilinochchi, had a narrow escape.
