Agreeable price for cane sought

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: State Secretary of the CPI(M) N.Varadarajan has written to Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi urging him to call for a dialogue with farmers unions to fix an agreeable price for sugarcane.

In his letter he said that rising prices of other essential commodities and low prices for agricultural produce had combined to put farmers at great hardship. Mr. Varadarajan urged both the State and Central governments to fix higher prices for cane. Even private mills in Erode had come to an understanding with the farmers, offering upto Rs. 1270 per tonne, he added.
