‘New age’ training for teachers

Corporation to partner with IT, ITES firms

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation, in partnership with a few leading IT and ITES companies, is developing a programme aimed at imparting “new age skills” to teachers of Corporation schools.

The programme, expected to be launched in about two months, would equip teachers with skills that would help them make the best use of computers, Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni told The Hindu on Wednesday. “We have been talking to major companies like IBM, Intel, Cognizant and a Bangalore-based e-learning company, too. Together, we are working on a module that will enable teachers to maximise their knowledge of computers. Earlier, we trained the teachers in association with ELCOT,” he said.

The “new age skills” would come in handy both inside and outside the classroom. The programme seeks to enrich the teaching-learning process, as well as facilitate easier administration by way of better maintenance of records and registers in a comprehensive database.

“When data is stored in hard copies or records, it becomes challenging to compare or draw inferences. Once it is in electronic form, it is always available for ready reference,” Mr. Lakhoni said.

The civic body is also working on developing a portal exclusive for students and teachers of corporation schools. “Satyam is in the process of developing a software for us. Once that is through, any detail pertaining to a student or teacher could be tracked easily.”
