Gireman pulls off a big surprise

Coimbatore: Former under-19 State champion Ja. Gireman of Coimbatore pulled off a surprise win over Statemate J. Saranya, the current national under-13 champion, in the fourth round of the all-India FIDE-rated Open chess tournament at the Adithya Institute of Technology on Thursday.

Vellore defeated Pudukottai by 86 runs in a first round encounter of the ICL Mahaveer Chand Memorial Trophy inter-district under-14 tournament at Vellore.

The scores (first round): Vellore 129 for five in 25 overs (C. Mohammed Imdadullah 52) bt Pudukottai 43 in 16.5 overs (A. Harish three for three).

Tirunelveli 67 in 20.4 overs (Vignesh three for four) lost to Perambalur 68 for one in 16.4 overs.
